About the Artist

Ron Brown is an American painter based in Los Angeles, California. His work is inspired by the world around him as well as the world(s) he creates. It is characterized by a diversity of tools, techniques and styles.

From early on, Ron was exposed to fantasy, science fiction, and horror by way of film, TV, and comic books. Dinosaurs, monsters, and heroes became the primary subjects of his crayon drawings. He also showed an early interest in anatomy.

From middle school, he started to create illustrations based on comic books, creating his own characters and stories. Combined with his passion for film, he would continue to study animation after transferring back to LA from an art scholarship at Mesa college. Graduating with honors in 1991, he received a BFA in illustration from ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, CA.  (graduating with honors) in 1991 During his enrollment, he was also selected for an internship at Disney Feature Animation.

For the next two decades he would work in animation for projects such as ‘A Troll in Central Park’ (1993), ‘Pagemaster’ (1993) and ‘Cats don’t Dance’ (1994). He worked on ‘Van Helsing’ for Captive Audience Studio in 2003. He would also work in illustration, visual development and art direction of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (2003), Passion of the Christ (2003).

After teaching part-time at Art Center, LCAD, CSFU in LA, Ron became a full-time faculty member and head of figurative arts at Mt. San Antonio College in 2006. During this time he received a scholarship for his MFA from the Laguna College of Art and Design, which let him explore an even greater variety of reasons for, and approaches to, making art.

He would continue to explore both contemporary impressionism and expressionism. In 2021, he retired from his teaching position to work as an artist full-time.

Ron Brown is an award-winning artist. His work Angel & Angel II have been awarded first place at Dragon Con Art show in1999 and 2000, as well as an award at Con Jose 2000. His work was featured in 2015 The Avenue magazine’s October issue and Artists Magazine May/June 2026. His work can be found in private collections in the US, New Zealand, and Sweden.
